Name: Jacob Stewart
Sport: Boys Track
Events: 110-meter high hurdles, 300-meter intermediate hurdles, 4×800-meter relay, 4×400-meter relay.
Why do you like track?: I like Track because physical torture is my idea of fun! (Just kidding, that’s cross country.) I actually like track because I like to hurdle. It requires a lot more than just endurance; it requires you to work on technique and form and a thousand other things each of which will make you run just a little bit faster. And with each success you gain a little bit more control, not just over your times, but over your body and over your mind.
Season goals: I hope to make it to regionals in both hurdle events, and hopefully retain the 4×8 team’s streak as sectional champions.
Do you have a pre-race routine?: Before every meet, I lead a team prayer. We usually do plyos, then I usually run at least one 800 before my first event (the 4×8) and then (obviously) I run another 800 before my second event, which is right after the 4×8, the 110-meter hurdles. I also change into a different set of spikes, then I usually change back and run a 100 or so before the 300 hurdles, and the same for whatever other event I do (either the 200, the 4×4 or something else).
Favorite coach’s quote: “You’re done,” — coach Walker
Athletic inspiration: My mom. She made me run for punishment when I was in elementary school, and I really showed her when I ended up liking it! Anyway, she’s always pushed me to give it my all (as she does). I’ll be running the Indy Marathon with her this fall.
Favorite Athlete: Aries Merritt. This man is crazy fast on the hurdles.
What is something most people don’t know about you?: One time I broke a hurdle, and didn’t even stop to ask if it was OK.
